 If you don't know the exact username but you know their name, Instagram's search also matches display names. Try variations — first name, full name, common nicknames. Verified accounts and accounts you've engaged with rank higher in results.

If you have their phone number, Instagram can match it to their account if they've linked their number. Profile → menu → Settings → Find people to follow → Connect contacts.
 Once contacts are connected, Instagram will surface accounts of people you have in your phone. This is the fastest way to find people whose username you don't know but whose phone number you do.
 Caveats: they need to have connected their phone to Instagram (most do). Their privacy settings need to allow contact-based discovery (default is yes). It only works for accounts where their real phone number is on file.

If they have a Facebook account linked to their Instagram, you can find them through the cross-platform suggestions. Make sure your Facebook is connected to Instagram (Profile → Settings → Accounts Center). Friends-of-friends from Facebook show up as "People you may know" inside Instagram.
 This is the slowest but most reliable method for finding someone whose digital footprint is on Facebook.

If you know where they live or where they were tagged in something recently, you can browse Instagram by location. Tap the magnifying glass → search a city or place → tap the location → see all posts tagged at that location.
 This works best for finding people who tag frequently. For accounts that don't tag locations, this doesn't help.

If you have a photo of them but no Instagram info, save the photo and run it through Google Images or a dedicated reverse-image tool like TinEye. If they've used the same photo on Instagram, the search will surface the profile.
 This is the most surveillance-feeling method and the least reliable, but it works as a last resort.

How to Find Someone on Instagram (Even Without the Username)

You can hide just your following list on Instagram without hiding the follower count. Here’s the toggle, plus what it actually does and doesn’t hide.

Open Instagram. Profile. Top-right menu. Settings and privacy. Account privacy. Look for Followers and following — inside it you should see two separate toggles since 2025: one for the follower list, one for the following list.
 Flip just the following list toggle. Your follower count and follower list stay visible. Your following count gets hidden, and tapping the Following label does nothing.
 If you don't see two separate toggles, your Instagram client is on an older release. Update the app. The split exists on iOS, Android, and web as of mid-2026.

The visible "Following" count next to Posts and Followers disappears. Tapping the Following label opens nothing. Your following list is no longer browseable to anyone visiting your profile.
 Important: people you follow still know you follow them. The follow event triggered a notification on their end when it happened. Hiding the list later doesn't undo that.
 Your own profile still shows who you follow when you tap your own Following label. The hiding is for other people viewing your account, not for you.

If someone goes to a public account you follow, your name still appears in their follower list. The "X follows them" connection persists even when your own following list is hidden. Hiding only stops people from starting at your profile and seeing who you follow — it doesn't erase your trail across other accounts.
 If someone screenshots your profile before you hide the list, the screenshot doesn't update retroactively. Hiding is forward-only.
 For accounts you want to follow truly privately, the only working approach is to use a separate account for that and keep it private. Hiding the following list on your main account is a soft measure.

The follower count is social proof — for creators, businesses, and people who use Instagram as a portfolio, the count itself is visible value. Hiding it can hurt outreach and signal weirdness.
 The following list is the opposite. It tells viewers who you watch, what your taste cluster is, and (for people who care) clues about your private interests. There's almost no upside to leaving it public for accounts that aren't trying to signal community presence.

How to Hide Your Instagram Following List (Without Hiding Followers)

Instagram doesn’t sort your follower list chronologically anymore. Here’s the only method that still surfaces newest-first follower order in 2026.

Around 2019, Instagram switched the follower list display from "newest first" to "suggested order." Suggested order biases the top of the list toward accounts you've engaged with most recently, regardless of when they followed you. So the first names you see in your follower list are often friends you've interacted with this month — not whoever joined yesterday.
 The change was deliberate. Showing follower activity in real chronological order made the platform feel surveillance-like. The same era saw the removal of the public activity feed for similar reasons.
 This means there's no setting you can flip to get chronological order back. It's not a hidden feature; it's a product decision.

A <a href="/blog/instagram-follower-tracker-without-login">no-login</a> follower tracker is the working answer. Paste your own public username, the tool takes a snapshot of your follower list, and the next time you check it shows the diff: who's new, who left, sorted by when each change was detected.
 The first check is your baseline — you won't see prior history, just the current state. The second check (a day or week later) shows the delta. From that point forward, every check surfaces the chronological newest-first view that Instagram itself won't.
 Critical detail: this works on your own public account or any other public account. If your account is private, no external tool can see your follower list without authentication. In that case, see the next section.

The popular advice is "scroll to the top of your follower list — the newest ones will be there." Partially true, partially not. To be precise: trackers don't have access to Instagram's exact follow timestamps. They reconstruct chronological order from snapshot diffs.
 If a tracker takes a snapshot at noon and another at midnight, anyone in the midnight snapshot but not the noon one is a "recent follower" from that 12-hour window. The order within that window approximates from the position in the public list at midnight.
 This is precise enough for any practical use case. You don't need second-level timestamps to know whether a campaign worked or who joined this week. We dug into this more in our <a href="/blog/instagram-recent-followers">recent followers piece</a>.

How to See Your Instagram Followers in Order (Newest First)

Remove a follower on Instagram in three taps without blocking them. The person isn’t notified, doesn’t lose access to your public posts, and won’t see you in their feed.

Open your own profile. Tap your follower count. The follower list opens. Find the person you want to remove. Tap the Remove button next to their name (it appears between their handle and the verified-style menu).
 A confirmation prompt asks "Remove this follower?" Tap Remove. The person is gone from your list.
 If you don't see a Remove button, your version of Instagram might call it different ("Remove from followers" or similar). The function is the same.

There's no native bulk-remove feature. You remove one at a time. This is intentional — Instagram doesn't want the feature used as a mass-action tool.
 If you find yourself wanting to remove fifty followers at once, the underlying problem is probably better solved by going private (which restricts who can follow you in the future) or by hiding your follower list entirely. The removed person no longer follows you. They aren't notified. Your posts don't appear in their feed and stories no longer auto-surface to them.
 They can still find your profile if they search for your handle directly. They can still see your posts if your account is public. They can follow you again at any time by tapping Follow on your profile — and you'd get a follow notification just like the first time.
 If you want to prevent them from following you back, you need to block (which also removes them, plus prevents re-follow). Removing is the softer middle ground.

Remove when you want to quietly stop appearing in their feed but don't have a problem with them. Bots, casual followers from a different era of your account, people you don't want to broadcast to but also don't want to insult by blocking.
 Block when you don't want them to have access at all. Harassment, exes, ghosts, people who'd be a problem if they kept following. The difference is whether you want a closed door or an open door with your house gone.

How to Remove a Follower on Instagram (Without Blocking)

Block someone on Instagram in three taps. Plus the difference between block, restrict, and mute — and which one fits which situation.

Open the profile. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right of their profile page. Tap Block. Confirm. Done.
 You'll get a follow-up prompt asking if you want to block other accounts they may have. If you suspect they have secondary accounts, this option blocks proactively. Otherwise skip it.

You don't have to visit the profile if they've left a comment or sent a DM that surfaced them in your activity. Tap their username from the comment or message. The profile opens. Use the same three-dot menu → Block.
 For DMs specifically, you can also long-press a message and tap Block directly. That route blocks them and deletes the message thread at the same time.

For the blocked person: they can't see your profile, posts, stories, or reels. They can't find you in search. They can't tag you. They can't message you. If they try to visit your profile by direct URL, they'll see "User not found." Their own posts and profile are still visible to you unless you also restrict them, but you won't get notifications from them.
 For you: they vanish from your follower and following lists. Their comments on your posts disappear from your view. DM threads are removed. Their likes and reactions on your content stop showing.
 Blocking is reversible. You can unblock by visiting their profile (yes, you can still navigate to it directly if you remember the URL) and tapping unblock, or by going to Settings → Blocked accounts. Once unblocked, they don't automatically refollow — they'd have to follow you again from scratch.

Restrict is for situations where you don't want to escalate but also don't want their content surfacing. Their comments on your posts only show to them — you and other viewers don't see them unless you specifically approve. Their DMs go to a hidden requests folder. They can still see your profile and posts. They don't know they're restricted.
 Mute is the softest option. You don't see their posts in your feed or their stories at the top, but you're still technically following each other. Mute is for accounts you don't want to <a href="/blog/how-to-unfollow-on-instagram">unfollow</a> (for social reasons) but also don't want to see daily.
 The decision: block if they shouldn't have any access; restrict if you want their interactions invisible without confrontation; mute if you just want their content out of your feed. How to Block Someone on Instagram (and the Three Softer Options)

How to unfollow on Instagram in 2026 — from a profile, from your Following list, or in bulk. Plus whether the person notices, and the mass-unfollow tool warning.

Open the profile of the person you want to unfollow. Tap the button below their bio that says Following. A confirmation prompt appears. Tap Unfollow. Done.
 The button updates to Follow immediately. The person isn't notified. The unfollow is reflected in your following count instantly and in theirs within a minute or two as Instagram syncs.

Open your own profile. Tap your following count to open the <a href="/blog/how-to-hide-following-list-instagram">Following list</a>. The list is searchable and sortable. Tap the Following button next to any account to unfollow them without leaving the list.
 This is the right method if you're cleaning up multiple accounts in one sitting. Don't do too many in one session — Instagram throttles aggressive unfollowing patterns and you can hit a temporary action <a href="/blog/how-to-block-someone-instagram">block</a>.

There are apps that unfollow accounts in bulk. Don't use them.
 Mass unfollow apps require an Instagram login, automate the unfollow action at a rate Instagram detects as bot-like, and frequently trigger account restrictions including shadowbans and login lockouts. We've seen accounts banned within 48 hours of using a high-volume mass unfollow tool.
 If you have a real reason to unfollow many accounts, the right pace is about 50-100 per day at most, done manually, with breaks. That stays under Instagram's automation detection thresholds. The temptation to do it in one batch is exactly what the bad tools sell — and exactly what Instagram catches.

Not automatically. Instagram sends no notification when you unfollow someone.
 They'll find out only if they specifically check their follower list and notice your name is gone. Or if they look at your profile and see "Follow" instead of "Following." Or if a third-party tool tells them. Most people don't run any of these checks for most accounts.
 If they're tracking unfollows actively — using a tool like ours, ironically — they might notice. That's an edge case for any individual unfollow but a near-certainty for prominent figures or people who specifically watch their follower behavior.

How to Unfollow Someone on Instagram (and Whether They’ll Know)

Two ways to find Instagram unfollowers in 2026. The fast way with a free tool, the slow way by hand — and what each method actually catches.

A <a href="/blog/instagram-follower-tracker-without-login">no-login</a> follower tracker is the right tool for this if you want to know within minutes and don't want to keep your own list.
 Open the tool, paste a public username, and the result page shows recent follower activity including unfollows. If the tracker hasn't seen this account before, the first check establishes a baseline; the second check (a day or week later) shows the change. For accounts the tool has been monitoring on its own, you may see longer history immediately.
 Critical detail: this works for your own public account or any other public account. There's no login required and the account being checked isn't notified. The tool reads public profile data the same way an anonymous visitor would.
 If your account is private, an outside tool can't see your follower list without authentication. In that case, see method 2.

If you don't want to use an outside tool, the manual method is straightforward. Once a week, open your follower list, scroll through it, and note anyone you've noticed leaving.
 For accounts under 200 followers, this is feasible — you'll roughly know everyone. For accounts over 500, it stops working unless you keep your own list externally (in Notes or a spreadsheet) and diff it.
 The manual method catches obvious unfollows but misses anything subtle. The weekly check window means an unfollow on day one and a re-follow on day three look like nothing happened. A tool catches the change; the eye doesn't.

The answer is "usually nothing." This is the part most "who unfollowed you" guides skip.
 People unfollow for reasons that have nothing to do with you. Content reset. Feed cleanup. Account switch. Real-life relationship change. Reacting to a single unfollow with confrontation reads as needy in the best case and aggressive in the worst.
 If the unfollow is from someone you care about, wait a week. If you still care, send them a message about something else — not about the unfollow. Let the situation resolve without you forcing it.
 If the unfollow is from a stranger, a ghost account, or someone whose name you don't recognize, move on entirely. The actual value of knowing about unfollows is the trend signal, not the individual events. Sometimes a "unfollow" isn't actually an unfollow. The account deleted itself, deactivated, or got banned. To the tracker (and to your follower list), the result looks the same: that account is no longer following you.
 You can sanity-check by trying to visit the account. If the profile doesn't load and shows "user not found," it was deleted or banned rather than actively unfollowing you. Doesn't really change what you do about it, but it's worth knowing the difference if a specific name surprises you.

How to Check Who Stopped Following You on Instagram

Short answer: no, Instagram removed the activity feed in 2019. Here’s what changed, why, and the limited workarounds that still exist in 2026.

Before October 2019, every Instagram account had an Activity tab with two sub-views. "You" showed your own notifications. "Following" showed a real-time feed of what the accounts you followed were doing — including the accounts they recently followed.
 It was the most useful and most invasive feature Instagram ever shipped. You could watch your favorite creator follow a new restaurant in real time. You could see your ex follow someone. It generated drama in volumes Instagram eventually decided weren't worth defending.
 In October 2019 the "Following" sub-view was removed. The Activity tab still exists but only shows your own notifications. There is no longer any path inside Instagram to see what other people followed.

Officially, Instagram said most users didn't use the feature. That's probably true. Unofficially, the feature was generating exactly the kind of surveillance dynamics that turned into PR problems — people checking ex-partners' activity, journalists tracking celebrity behavior, jealousy and stalking.
 Removing it was part of the broader 2019-2021 trend of Instagram tightening what one user could see about another. The same era removed visible like counts (briefly), reduced public follower-list ordering, and generally moved the platform from "social graph as content" toward "feed as content."

The honest version: not much.
 You can check someone's <a href="/blog/how-to-hide-following-list-instagram">Following list</a> and compare it against your memory of last week. If the list is sorted in roughly recent-first order at the top (which it sometimes is for small accounts), the newest follow will be near the top. That's the manual workaround. It's tedious and unreliable.
 You can use a <a href="/blog/instagram-follower-tracker-without-login">no-login</a> tracker on the target account to see their recent followers (not who they followed). That's a different question but useful adjacent data. If the account is small, the difference between "who follows them" and "who they follow" is small.  You cannot trust any tool that claims to surface "who someone recently followed." The data isn't in Instagram's public surface, and a tool that says it has it is either lying or scraping in ways that get accounts banned.

You'll see articles claiming you can check the Following list and use sort order to detect recent activity. This is partially true but the sort order isn't pure chronology — Instagram inserts algorithmic boosts for accounts you've engaged with. The "top of the list" is "what Instagram thinks is most relevant," not "the most recent follow."
 You'll see apps claiming they can detect new follows for any account. Most are showing you the target's recent followers (your direction reversed) and calling it the wrong thing. The honest ones admit the limit.
 If you've been told there's a clever way to do this and it sounded too good, it almost certainly is. The data simply isn't exposed anymore.

Can You See Who Someone Recently Followed on Instagram?

Find non-followers on Instagram in 2026. The free no-login tools that surface accounts you follow but who don’t follow back — plus the manual method and what to do with the list.

No. Instagram has never built a "non-followers" view, and there's no signal they ever will. The closest the app gets is a list of "Least interacted with" accounts in your Following tab, which sorts by engagement rather than reciprocity. It's not the same data.
 That gap is why a whole category of tools exists to do this comparison for you. They aren't doing anything magical — they're just reading your follower list and your <a href="/blog/how-to-hide-following-list-instagram">following list</a> and showing you the set difference.

A simple set comparison. Your following list contains the accounts you follow. Your follower list contains the accounts that follow you. The non-followers are the accounts in the first list but not the second.
 If your account is public, an outside tool can read both lists from public profile data and run the diff. If your account is private, an outside tool can't see either list without a login, so the only options are an Instagram-authenticated app or doing the comparison manually.

 For accounts you follow because you want to see their content — creators, brands, news sources — whether they follow back is irrelevant. You're not in it for the reciprocity.
 For accounts you follow because you have a real relationship — friends, family, work contacts — non-reciprocity sometimes means they didn't accept yet, sometimes means they accidentally unfollowed, sometimes means the relationship cooled. It's data, not drama. Don't react in the moment.
 For accounts you follow as part of a growth strategy — the "follow X, hope they follow back" approach — non-reciprocity is a sign the strategy isn't working. Safest means: doesn't ask for your Instagram password, doesn't bundle automation features, doesn't store your follower list permanently. By that definition, a no-login web tracker is the safest tool in the category.
 Login-based mobile apps can do the same diff, often with push notifications when the list changes. For a snapshot-based tool: it updates when you check. So if you check today, the list reflects today. If you check next week, it reflects next week. The tool doesn't run continuously on your behalf.
 For a continuous monitoring app (mobile, login-based): they typically refresh every few hours and alert you on changes. The cost is that you've handed over your Instagram session, which is the trade-off we keep coming back to.

Yes, you can hide your Instagram followers and following list. Here’s the exact setting Instagram added in 2024, plus what it looks like to other people.

Open Instagram. Go to your profile. Tap the menu in the top-right corner. Tap Settings and privacy. Scroll to Who can see your content and tap Account privacy. Inside there, there's a toggle called Followers and following. Turn it on. Done.
 That toggle does two things at once. It hides the numeric count on your profile (so people see your handle and bio but not "1,247 followers"), and it hides the lists themselves (so tapping "followers" or "following" doesn't show you who follows whom).
